Group leaders

ABI sites are centred on Group Leaders who are senior scientists with an excellent track record and demonstrated leadership in the field of bioinformatics. ABI groups will play a key role in advancing the Institute’s core activities in bioinformatics research, training, and service provision. An open call has been launched for Group Leaders interested in becoming part of the ABI network. While this is targeting established scientists, future calls will include opportunities for Associate Group Leaders and ABI Fellows (Postdocs and early-career bioinformatics scientists), see: https://www.bioinformaticsinstitute.africa/about-organization

Applications are now open for ABI Group Leaders

The African Bioinformatics Institute (ABI) is now accepting applications for Group Leaders. These positions are open to senior bioinformatics researchers based in Africa who lead independent research groups at universities, research institutes, public health agencies, or similar institutions. Ideal applicants will have a strong record of contributions to the field of bioinformatics, including publications, tool development, mentoring, securing grants, and collaboration. Most importantly, applicants must be committed to advancing bioinformatics locally and across the continent.

Group Leaders will join a vibrant, pan-African network of peers and contribute to the ABI’s scientific and strategic direction. While no remuneration is provided, the role offers valuable non-financial benefits, including:

  • Participation in ABI-wide collaborative research and training initiatives
  • Access to targeted funding opportunities
  • Support and mentorship for career and institutional growth
  • Increased visibility
  • Access to a broad network of collaborators
  • Support for training initiatives

Appointments are for a three-year term, renewable based on performance and continued institutional support. Group Leaders must be salaried by their home institutions and able to raise their own research funding.

To apply, candidates must submit an online application form, a detailed CV, and an institutional letter of support confirming their institution’s endorsement and willingness to support the leadership role.
