The African Bioinformatics Institute (ABI) has been established to support the growth of life science research across the African continent. With a focus on providing bioinformatics expertise, infrastructure, and resources, the ABI is laying the groundwork to address critical challenges in African health, agriculture, and the environment. Its work is aligned with broader continental development priorities, including the Sustainable Development Goals. Through innovative bioinformatics research, capacity-building initiatives, collaboration, and the development of practical, data-driven tools, the ABI aims to positively impact the health and well-being of Africa’s people, flora, and fauna.

The ABI is focused on advancing bioinformatics capacity and collaboration across Africa. As it grows, the Institute is working toward:

Expanding African expertise and capacity in bioinformatics and data science
Improving access to high-quality bioinformatics infrastructure to support pandemic preparedness
Supporting the development and application of One Health approaches on the continent.
Facilitating knowledge exchange and the sharing of data and insights to strengthen global health and protect biodiversity
Connecting bioinformaticians and researchers across Africa and beyond
Delivering targeted training for a diverse range of users and professionals in bioinformatics
