The ABI is structured as a distributed network, anchored by a central Hub and a growing number of sites hosted at African institutions. Each site is is represented by one or more Group Leaders who contribute to ABI’s core activities in research, training, and service delivery. The ABI Hub serves as the strategic and operational centre, providing coordination, shared infrastructure, and support across the network.
As the Institute expands, it will welcome Associate Group Leaders and Fellows, offering mentorship and integration into a continent-wide community of practice. This model enables scalable, regionally grounded collaboration, driving bioinformatics capacity and innovation across Africa.

Get Involved with the ABI
The ABI offers multiple pathways for individuals and institutions to engage in advancing bioinformatics across Africa, even if you are not currently eligible to serve as a Group Leaders. Additional membership opportunities include Associate Group Leaders and Fellows, as well as Emerging Leaders or Advocates wanting to develop bioinformatics at their institution (coming soon). In addition to Communities of Practice (CoP), the following opportunities for involvement with the ABI will open as the Institute becomes more established.
