Motivate, Incentivise, Curate: Turning Scientists into Data Contributors

Date: TBA

Organised by: Dr Maja Rey

Overview:

In many research communities, database curators and infrastructure teams face a common challenge: how to motivate scientists to share, annotate, and submit their data in a structured, FAIR-compliant way. While researchers often recognise the value of open and FAIR data, practical barriers can hinder their active contribution. This interactive workshop is designed for data curators, data stewards, and infrastructure professionals who want to move beyond reminders and compliance checklists and learn about incentives for FAIR data handling. After the icebreaker identifiying the researchers’ pain points in FAIR data management we’ll have short presentations of case studies focusing on data management solutions and pipelines to facilitate data submission or community curation. Within an interactive breakout session, we’ll brainstorm strategies to motivate researchers to improve their data handling behaviour. In the concluding plenary discussion, we’ll share key insights and outline actionable steps.

Objectives:

  • Identify barriers that prevent researchers from submitting data.
  • Learn from real-world examples where FAIR data handling was successfully implemented.
  • Explore motivational strategies and incentive structures that promote researcher engagement in data submission and/or community curation.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Knowing appropriate motivational strategies and incentives for FAIR data management
  • Design low-barrier interventions that encourage researcher participation in data submission and curation
  • Stronger networking among curators facing similar challenges

Target Audience:

  • Database curators
  • Repository managers
  • Data stewards
  • Project managers
  • Publishers
  • Funders
