Overview

Across all disciplines, there are thousands of repositories (databases and knowledge bases), as well as community-developed standards for (the identification, citation and reporting of) digital objects such as datasets, software, and materials. Making the right choice is challenging, but understanding this evolving landscape is essential: standards and repositories are pillars of the FAIR Principles. This workshop introduces FAIRsharing (https://fairsharing.org) and its relevance to both biocuration and the African region, a widely adopted, curated, informative and educational resource on standards, interrelated to repositories and policies, across all disciplines. FAIRsharing guides consumers to discover and select these resources with confidence, producers to make their resources more discoverable, more widely adopted, and powers third-party tools by providing trustworthy content to promote standards and databases.

Affiliation/Institution
University of Oxford
Objectives

Illustrate the process of curating FAIRsharing content, and how it can be applied to standards, databases and policies (with a particular focus on resources and policies from Africa). The curation of FAIRsharing content can be done by anyone to increase the visibility of resources of interest to a variety of stakeholders (see also https://fairsharing.org/educational#nutshell)

Illustrate how curated FAIRsharing content can be used at:

  • Researcher level (to discover resources to use when, eg creating DMPs)
  • Resource manager level (to compare your resource to others in your region or subject area in terms of eg openness)
  • Policymaker level (to identify those resources that should be recommended within open access and data sharing policies)
Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this workshop, you will grow your knowledge of how FAIRsharing can drive your decisions and activities, specifically by:

  1. Learning functionality and content
    • How to discover and evaluate appropriate standards, databases and policies, and how to register new content in FAIRsharing
    • How to create a FAIRsharing Collection and/or an Organization page to showcase repositories, standards and policy relevant to your discipline(s) or institution
    • Introduction to the FAIRsharing API and examples of third party tools utilising FAIRsharing content for FAIR evaluation/assessment, DMP creation, KG development and more
  2. Supporting your activities and decision-making
    • How to enhance your guidance and training material for researchers by endorsing and signposting FAIRsharing content and educational material
    • How to meet the policy requirements, around standards and repositories, by funders, journal publishers, institutions and other organisations
    • How to join the FAIRsharing Community Champion Programme (https://fairsharing.org/community_champions) for contributing to curation activities, expanding educational provision and gaining recognition, professional development and influence
Target Audience

The workshop is designed for resource managers, curators, data stewards and anyone developing or maintaining repositories, standards, and policies
